It has all culminated to this moment. This awards season has, by far, been one of the most interesting, with multiple titles winning top honours instead of one or two sweeping. And while Three Billboards seems to have gained momentum of late, this awards season has proven that anything is possible with The Shape of Water claiming major awards as well, critics raving about Lady Bird and Call Me By Your Name, and Get Out redefining a genre.
Phantom Thread was the surprise contender with multiple nominations in major categories; Blade Runner 2049 dominated the technical awards; Mudbound’s Netflix backlash did not hamper it (and we have our female cinematographer nominated for the first time!); Greta Gerwig and Jordan Peele scored nominations despite odds; and The Shape of Water led the pack with 13 nominations.
