The 2018-2019 awards season has come to an end as tumultuous as the journey to its destination. After months of speculation, Green Book was crowned the 91st Academy Award Best Picture winner, marking the second time in recent history (following Ben Affleck’s win for Argo) that a film wins the award without having its director nominated. The film also won the awards for Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor.
The night’s big winner was Bohemian Rhapsody which, despite all odds (and common sense), won four out of its five nominations, including a Best Actor award for Rami Malek’s performance. In his speech, the actor expressed his struggle with identity as a first generation American born to Egyptian parents.
Black Panther made a splash with three wins, as did Roma, becoming Mexico’s first Foreign Language Film entry to win the coveted award and beating out Lebanese entry Capharnaum.
A welcome upset came in the form of a Best Actress win for Olivia Colman, the only win for The Favourite despite landing 10 nominations. That, of course, meant the Glenn Close’s performance in The Wife did not earn her the long overdue Oscar she was expected to receive tonight.
As we close the year, we look forward to the films that are yet to come and the ones that flew under the radar in 2018. At Reel Rambler, we will remember it for its foreign films and documentary work. And so until next year, here is the full list of the 91st Annual Academy Awards winners:
